Purpose of the RAIN Group
- To provide an effective voice for the local community’s opposition to the proposed Ince Marshes RDF Power Station and Resource Recovery Park.
- To develop, present and argue the most effective case for the rejection of the current proposals and any subsequent similar proposals.
In meeting the above purpose we will be guided by the following principles:
- We support any initiative to reduce waste at source. This should start with reductions in the amount of packaging and the maximum use of recyclable packaging materials.
- We support kerbside collection and recycling of waste to minimise the need for further sorting and transportation.
- There should be no net importation of waste into Cheshire.
- We believe that, in order to encourage maximum local recycling, waste should only be accepted from outside Cheshire where it can be shown that the local waste management authority is recycling waste as effectively as Cheshire and has firm plans to improve its recycling ratio.
- We are totally opposed to the importation of waste from outside the UK.
- We accept the need for some regional recycling plants for commercial reasons. However, we are opposed to siting all such plants in one location because of the effect of increased traffic and pollution on the populations in the vicinity.
- We believe recycling plants should be located on existing industrial or brown field sites. We are opposed to the siting of recycling plants on green field land.
- We accept that at present there will be the need to landfill some waste. This should only be waste that cannot be recycled.
- We are opposed to the incineration of waste. We accept, however, that incineration may be the only option currently available for the disposal of “ special waste”, where recycling or landfill is not suitable for health and/or safety reasons. Even in this case we believe that other options should be actively explored and adopted as soon as practicable.
